What’s behind Toyota’s tough talk with its Kentucky workforce?

Toyota’s calling for cost cuts at its Georgetown, Kentucky complex to retain a lock on Camry production — could be another indication of Akio Toyoda’s ongoing effort to instill a sense of unease and even trauma inside his family’s company. But Toyota insiders say it is really part and parcel of the company’s effort to play the U.S. political game. If the Trump administration is to put pressure on foreign automakers Toyota will respond by building a new plant in the country, but will also seek a more efficient U.S. production in the process. The Kentucky facilities are no less efficient than they’ve been in the past, but now Toyota management can take actions that were previously off limits.
