Volvo seems to have found yet another opening in the race to the future, becoming the first carmaker to sign an important volume autonomous vehicles deal with a ride-sharing giant — Uber. This is becoming fascinating to watch: Are Volvo’s various out-in-front moves just hustle or true signs that the Li Shufu-Hakan Samuelsson combine is an industry trailblazer? In this case, Volvo has parlayed a safety reputation that once seemed outdated into what industry watchers believe gives it a noteworthy (but still very early) lead in the self-driving marketing wars.
