SAIC, China’s No. 1 automaker, is moving into India, just as it its partner General Motors has pulled out of sales in the country and Ford ponders whether it intends to stick around.
Operating a bit under the radar screen, SAIC has made a significant move. It aims to build cars in India by 2019, though it has yet to release details. (General Motors India’s shuttered plant at Halol is one of the locations thought to be under consideration.)
SAIC is expected to be among the three largest in the world by 2020 and it could get there by moving into areas where other global giants are pulling back.
