Even cash-rich BMW must sacrifice for the new era. Where does that leave lesser companies?

BMW burned through a mountain of cash with its i Series EV vehicles strategy and has not seen much payback. Now the company will approach its spending on autonomous vehicles and it’s next phase of electro-mobility more cautiously.

The announcement that it will cut procurement spending to pay for the future technology is a meaningful signal for the rest of the industry — an indication that the sacrifices will be huge as the industry transforms and getting the strategy right but the execution wrong will be not just be costly, but catastrophic.
